Cellphones morph into boarding passes at New York’s LaGuardia

I like this Idea...download your boarding pass onto your phone or device and off you go to the airport!  Full article here.

This could also lead to proximity booking in.

You have your e-boarding pass on your mobile and when you get the check-in area, the airport check-in machine sweeps for Bluetooth signals, requests the e-pass, confirms your reservations and transmits back a confirmation notification. This could even be in the form of an encrpyted 2D barcode.

Then as you reach security and your gate they scan your barcode, makes sure that it matches the system and through you walk.

This wouldn't be restricted to Windows Mobile either.

Couldn't proximity boarding be a little confusing though? Bluetooth surely has too great a range for this?

There are two Bluetooth options, a 100m range and a 10m range.

The 100m range could be used in a open lounge, the smaller 10m range could used within a coridoor space.

You would have bought your tickets before hand and will have previously received an activation code specific to a airline. Once confirmed the readers would have that code flagged to ignore. And other airline readers would ignore the code from the off.

I was thinking more of when you were moving through the gates. Surely with so many people in close proximity....?

    Oh I see...

Well, time is on their side. You almost always queue up in the registration area if you are booking in your luggage. Each desk could have four readers scanning the area. When one reader discovers your ticket, it communicates with the others to ignore your device in their sweeps. I dare say they could work through a crowd pretty quickly as long as the transfer is only a small amount of data <300Mb.

You could keep it on a smaller scale to begin with, using it just for the business class passengers in the executive lounge.

I was thinking about it earlier and 10 metres is not that much in an airport. I'm sure they could work it somehow. Be awesome implementation though if they get it going. Might make Blujacking a bit more of a concern though.
