    Re: VPN with WM6

    Hello everybody,

just to make this clear: has anyone ever been able to established a connection from WM6 through out VPN to Server 2003?

It doesn´t matter wether there is an ISA or not.

    Best regards

    Re: VPN with WM6

    Hi everybody,

I have the same problem... I need to connect to Unix server (IP XX.XX.XX.XX.XX) though Intenet by VPN tunnel. The enterprise uses PPTP VPN and the server is Windows OS... (Software) (it says me the IT manager).

When I use my laptop there is no problem... but if I use PDA (with VPN) there are problems...¡¡¡ the message is "problem with VPN Connection. Review User & Password and try again...." but i try sereval way without success...

Y use PDA with cellular built in...

What is the problem with WM 6.1??

    Regards,

    Aldo

    Hi all,

The solution is simple: use the NCP made Windows Mobile (and CE) VPN. It will connect to almost anything as long as it supports IPsec (-variant). Look here: http://www.ncp-e.com/.

They have both an entry version client and a managed enterpise version. They also have clients for Symbian, Win32/64 platforms (XP, Vista), Linux etc.

    Hi Arjen,

Thanks for your message & solution, but NCP is a propietary VPN solution (it need to install in PDA client and in server) and not support PPTP directly.

Please do you know other solution or explain me how to use this NCP solution.

    Saludos,

    Aldo

    Re: VPN with WM6

    Hi Aldo,

NCP is a VPN client that supports the native IPsec protocol in their standard client and additionally L2sec, IPsec/L2TP (but not PPTP) in their enterprise version. You do NOT need to use their own NCP server; it will work fine on a CheckPoint, Cisco ASA, Juniper NetScreen etc VPN concentrator. We tested the battery use with AES256 and IPsec compression on, VPN always on and it took about 1 to 2% extra battery comparing to running without the VPN (push email will take more). A little scenario:

During my holiday in Italy I used a Samsung i780 phone (locked to GPRS) with always on NCP VPN running. Did about 0,5 phonecall per day, did my email every day (10 minutes) and checked the weather forecast every day via internet (everything runs over the VPN btw). With 1 battery load I used the phone for 5,5 days before I had to reload!!!

True: you will have to install it on your PDA, but you will have the advantage of also having a statefull firewall and WLAN management. It also supports full management and profile lockdown (enterprise version) or local lockdown only (entry version).

However: the security modes it supports and variants theroff are almost endless, so are the configuration and tuning possibilities. In short: if you want to have real VPN power on the PDA: to my experience NCP is the only solution available.

    Ciao,

    Arjen

    Re: VPN with WM6

WM6 client works perfectly with ISA.

One thing that it isn't mentioned and required is that you have to go into Connections and go into Intranet Exceptions and add the local ip range of the VPN.

e.g. if your internal network (after you connect to VPN) is 192.168.2.x you have to add 192.168.2.* in the list

    similary if you want a url - e.g. http://intranet.mycompany.com

One thing you will have to notice if you connect over 3G/GPRS etc. is if your provider supports VPN channels (maybe they use a NAT method that doesn't support them).
