    Verizon XV6800 6.1 Update with EV-DO Rev. A Support!

Another exciting Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM update, this time for Verizon's VX6800, a Pro device with slider QWERTY. As Ed Hardy of Brighthand.com notes,

"Along with the jump to Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro --  the latest version of Microsoft's operating system for smartphones -- this upgrade adds support for Verizon's EV-DO Rev. A network, which offers faster data transfer speeds than the original version of EV-DO."

Great news for Verizon customers! The update is available directly from manufacturer UTStarcom.

So what happens if I put this in my US Cellular ppc6800 also a UT starcon build? Do I dare try this? What will the advantages be? I have mine made very finger friendly with the HTC today screen etc.

I don't think you can install this on a US Cellular phone. I believe the Verizon ROM will have info specific to the Verizon hardware, which may be different from the base UT Starcom device. Plus, if you've already got your device customized, the move to 6.1 won't bring you huge visible changes - the 6.1 Professional homescreen is very similar to the one you're already using...

As Bill stated it wont even install Doug....unless your US Cellular is unlocked. then it would install. but customization on the ROM would be to VZW preferences, not yours of course! Plus I'm sure your settings are more user-friendly than standard VZW Stick out tongue

Re: Verizon XV6800 6.1 Update with EV-DO Rev. A Support!

I recently tried to run this installer from a PC at work (I have a Mac at home) but the corporate proxy server would not allow it because the software "attempted to accept a connection as a server on TCP port 990 from 169.254.2.1".  Maybe I'm just paranoid, but it bothers me that an installer would require an outside connection.

That being said, I have a question for anyone who has recently upgraded a xv6800 from 6.0 to 6.1.  Are all your 3rd party apps compatable.  There are a few apps, such as Pocket Player, eWallet, and spb Phone Suite I have paid for and would like to reinstall.

Anyone have a comment on this?

Re: Verizon XV6800 6.1 Update with EV-DO Rev. A Support!

Welcome to the Connection, Kblakely! I am pretty sure one of our community members will have some advice for you about the XV6800. I don't have first-hand experience myself, but from everything I understand, the changes to WM 6.1 Pro were largely under the hood, and shouldn't impact application compatibility. The only areas where I believe 6.1 saw larger changes were with security and remote device management...
