New Smartphone OS Market Share Data from Gartner

JK on the Run is discussing the new smartphone market share data just released by Gartner. The biggest news noted: RIM has apparently edged past WM into the number two position behind Symbian. According to Gartner, market share looks like this in the second quarter of 2008:

    1. Symbian: 57.1%
    2. RIM: 17.4%
    3. Windows Mobile: 12%
    4. Linux: 7.3%
    5. Mac OS X: 2.8%
    6. Palm OS: 2.3%
    7. Other: 1.1%

Interesting! I think this might be the first time I've seen this good a breakdown of OS market share. Read more at JK on the Run.

I would have to agree...but now that I think about it Symbian...."quietly" is way ahead of the market....is this soley based on Nokia? Or am I forgetting something in my old age? Sleep

Re: New Smartphone OS Market Share Data from Gartner

Welcome, Brad - great question. I had to go to the original Gartner report to find the answers. It turns out the stats above are for worldwide smartphone sales. As for Symbian OS, Nokia licenses it to several manufacturers. If you look at the two tables in the Gartner report, you can figure out that Nokia's licensees accounted for about 3 million smartphone sales during the second quarter of 2008, which is about 1/6th of the total Symbian sales worldwide. According to the SymbianOS site, licensees have included: Fujitsu, LG, Mitsubishi, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Sharp and Sony Ericsson.
