It would be good to know a bit more about the setup.
e.g. If he was using only WiFi to sync the mail, connected to an ISP connection, he may have to specifiy a different outgoing mail server.
- I'd get him to try focusing on one email account while he is trying to get it working,
- Confirm what type of data connection he is using,
- Get him to confirm the incoming and outgoing servers for his email service, as they may be different.
- Confirm SSL settings like Laura mentioned.
Sometimes it is the strangest thing. E.g. A friend of mine bought an iphone and he could only recieve mail, and not send. And it turned out he needed to specifiy a username and password for both outgoing and incoming, although it didn't report any authentication issues.
