Poll : At what age would You give your child a cell phone?

At what age would You give your child a cell phone?

I personally would never go anywhere without my cellphone. This isn't because I have a demanding job that means that I need to be in constant touch, but because I have two children. I love the fact that I am always on the end of the phone for them, even now that they are into college years.

A friend of mine was discussing an article that she had read, that pointed out that today's college children are less independent because thay are able to phone home whenever they want. She said that in 'her day' she was only able to call home about once a week. It's true that my son calls me from college sometimes 2 or 3 times a day asking for my opinion or sometimes even asking me to help write a concluding paragraph to an essay. But I love this - why should children have to be independent. Why can't you maintain a close friendship with your grown up child. If having a cell phone means that this is so much easier to do, then as far as I am concerned, this is great.

Then today I saw this article in the Washington Post pointing out the dangers of children on cell phones crossing the road. But surely the same danger is there if they are with a friend and they are chatting away?

We know that driving while on the phone is dangerous - and teenagers and driving is dangerous enough let alone if they are also talking on the phone

    It's a tricky one.

I think an introduction to new technologies at an early age is important, however the full blown lifestyle that comes with mobiles probably should be held off until they are a tad more responsible.

They ran some things in australia for a while, they were cut down phones, that had say 4 buttons in them, which the parent pre-programs, eg.  1. Mum 2. Dad 3. Emergency 4. School.

This would allow them to access the only real numbers they would need while that age, but also allows them to get the experience. Of course, the parents bill doesnt end up growing and growing because they can't dial friends or text etc.

Yes - I believe there are similar phones in the US designed to be able to only dial certain numbers, especially for children and the elderly.

Yes there is such a phone in the US....AT&T has the Firefly target for kids 5 -12 which I find way to young! And I think Verizon had one also not sure of the name of it.

They are DIGITAL NATIVES, and they need digital life instruments (check m. prensky Cool isn't a phone, is a digital life tool!) . But having a phone means to manage a phone (charge it, don't loose it, sustainable costs....) and IMHO midlle class is a good age,

The day my kids got their drivers license is the same day they got a cell phone.  That way, no matter where the car took them, we could communicate.

    Welcome MrGadget.

Yes, once your kids are self-mobile - they have to have that cell phone. I think it's more like as soon as any of their friends get a license also. I always say to my son that if he doesn't feel comfortable about the way that someone drives, then he has to get out of that car and call himself a taxi, and I will gladly pay for it.

Sorry, I can't agree. You can call it "cell phone" an for you, Digital Immigrant, it is just a "PHONE BASED ON CELLULAR NETWORK",  for a boy it is a personal networking device, an "always connected life" tool, a Picture Grabber, Video and Mp3 Player, a friendship instrument, a status symbol, .... (My boys are 18 and 16 y.o.)

I used the photo section to upload two slides to explain the concept better. We aren't talking about "cell phone" we are talking about Window Mobile, literally Wink Mods, let me know if thi is in contrast with some policy... I never RTFM... Smile
