The Coolest Applications for Windows Mobile?

Jason's done it again - yet another great post about his favorite applications for Windows Mobile. Among his top picks? GH3, of course, as well as Hexic and SPB Mobile Shell. The SPB shell is one I've been wanting to try.

The original release of SPB Mobile Shell was prolly the single-best mobile application I'd seen in the last 5 years.

Until v.2 came out, which is even better than v.1.

    *cough* True Connect *cough*

This might not be a completely unbiased comment. But hey, we wouldn't have written it if we didn't think it was going to be pretty cool!

Actually, I think Voice Command is really cool.

I like Spb Mobile Shell and using Version, and wondering how I could get it to only appear rather than having to drop to the Today Screen and firing it up. Problem is, the security policy on the device requires a password and it seems Spb Mobile Shell doesn't always come back automatically after entering a password.

Totally with you on the fact that Voice Command is the bee's knees.

    Check out this post: http://www.chrisrue.com/funcave/2007/06/a-mobile-app-gets-whacked.html

OK yeah, I'm mostly talking about BCM on PocketPC and why it got the heave-ho from my Treo.

But don't miss the part where I talk about how sexxay a hardcore iPhone user found Voice Command to be!

Same goes for hardcore Crackberry addict lawyers when they hear VC in action.

Agreed, Voice Command should be integrated in more apps. Curious that Live Search has its own built-in voice recognition rather than taking advantage of Voice Command if it is installed on device. Wonder how much duplicate code I have on my device because I have both applications.

Related to this, though it's not a native application, it is related. If you haven't see it try jott.com, which is a very useful voice-based application. You basically dial in to the service which does speech to text that you can use to send text messages to yourself or to other people in an address book.

So for example, if I am driving and there is something I want to remind myself I hit the call button on my Bluetooth headset which kicks in Voice Command, I say "Call Jott," which dials the number then Jott says "Who do you want to jott?" I say myself, and it says "Jott yourself <beep> at which point I say what I want to remember and hang up. In a little bit I get a text message with a translation of what I entered, plus an email with a link to the audio recording. Very handy.

There are so many "cool" applications for Windows Mobile but there are a few that are always on my "must have" list.  The first two being RESCO Explorer an RESCO Photo Viewer.

RESCO Explorer offers a host features that File Explorer does not offer.  Features like encryption and file compression  and there is a special bonus, a registry editor.

RESCO Photo viewer is simply the best IMHO.  It is much faster than the Photo Viewer that comes with Windows Mobile and offers the user great flexibility in photo editing.  An added plus is that you get a screen capture utility.

You can visit RESCO here at http://www.resco.net/

Welcome Jack to the Connection forum - we really appreciate you visiting from the Windows Mobile Owners Circle.

I so agree about Resco Explorer - always top of my list when I get a new device.

Re: The Coolest Applications for Windows Mobile?

Well my must have apps consist of Spb Mobile Shell, Sprite Backup, Pocket Informant 8 and Voice Commander. The BT Headset by Blueant the V1, I'm really excited to see how this will work with Voice Commander since the V1 has true voice user interface.

Some of the coolest(& useful) applications which i like using on my Touch are:

    1. Info Feed.

    2. Opera Mobile

    3.  Cootek TouchPal (technically not an app)

    4. Sprint backup(This one is a real life-saver)

    5. HTC Home(I prefer this to the SPB shell as it comes out of the box with the Touch)

I took the suggestion from Jasons blog and got myself guitar hero three.

And the only problem i've found with opera mobile is websites that automatically generate pages and cab files based on browser type. They never seem to detect opera properly, and end up spitting an XP .exe file at me.

Here at Raspberry we spend more time developing rather than using! I tend to use the dev tools more than anything else (remote registry edit, remote process viewer end so on).

I'm just happy with the way everything works together on my phone - calls, email, and the ability to surf if I need to. Voice Commander and eWallet are popular with the other guys though.
