QUOTE:
Out in the west Texas town of El Paso, 57 percent of mobile subscribers ages 18 and over send and receive text messages--the highest percentage in the U.S.--according to a new consumer study published by market analysis firm Scarborough Research. Scarborough reports the national texting average among adults is 48 percent--other leading markets include Salt Lake City, Dallas and Memphis, which average text usage rates of 55 percent. On the flip side, Scarborough notes only 36 percent of adult subscribers text in the Fort Myers, Fla. and Charleston, W Va. markets, with Grand Rapids, Mich. bringing up the rear at just 35 percent.
Scarborough states that youth and cultural diversity are two demographic commonalities among communities where texting dominates--given that mobile messaging users are 49 percent more likely than all wireless subscribers to fall between the ages of 18 and 24, 14 percent more likely to be Hispanic and 24 percent more likely to be African-American, it makes sense that diverse markets like El Paso, Salt Lake City, Dallas and Memphis top the list. Scarborough adds that, on average, text users spend $87 on their monthly wireless bill, $12 more than average, and are 46 percent more likely than all subscribers to spend $150 or more on cellular service monthly. In addition, 20 percent of texters spend more than $1,000 online annually, compared to 17 percent of all mobile users.
