Microsoft to Buy Mobile Software Maker MobiComp

Microsoft on Thursday announced plans to buy MobiComp, a Portuguese company that makes software for the mobile world, including mobile posting to Web sites such as Facebook.

Microsoft hopes the acquisition will further its mobile ambitions, particularly in building new mobile data protection and sharing services, the company said in a statement. The company also plans to use MobiComp to further expand its ability to provide compelling software that can be used for work and play with mobile phones, PCs and the Internet.

MobiComp has strong ties with Europe's Vodafone (Verizon's parent company), among others, with a good number of customers in Portugal and Saudi Arabia.

If this is tied in with Live Mesh, we could see the mobile version arriving sooner rather than later.

And here is another article about this from Information Week.

Interesting tidbit at end of article -

"Windows Mobile is one of the top smart phone operating systems in the United States, though it lags far behind Symbian worldwide. Fifty handset makers build Windows Mobile phones for 160 carriers in 55 countries, and Microsoft expects 100% growth for Windows Mobile this year."
