And here's one more - a brand-new Computerworld interview with Scott Rockfeld, group products manager for the mobile communications business at Microsoft:

Microsoft: Forget iPhone; We're Still No. 2 in Business

In the interview, as Computerworld notes,Rockfeld makes clear:

"Companies -- lots of them -- are still buying Windows Mobile smart phones, and Microsoft Corp. doesn't want to let iPhone mania make them forget."

Still more: Chuong Nguyen's detailed Pocketnow.com article about some of the issues encountered with Apple's App Store.

"I wanted to see if Windows Mobile can compete with the rumored polish that Apple promises," Chuong writes.

Re: The iPhone 3G News Wrapup: Non-Hype Version

Here's another one that showed up this morning, and has already been widely referenced:

Walt Mossberg: Apple's MobileMe is Far Too Flawed to Be Reliable

This is a pretty harsh, and surprising, critique of Apple's "Exchange for the Rest of Us," about which Mossberg says,

"The problems I am citing are systemic."

    Something to keep in mind...!

Here's the real situation from the front lines at AT&T.

I love the iPhone, because it gets more people interested in smartphones/more powerful mobile devices.  I ask every customer that comes about what is so interesting about the iPhone.  Most of the people say internet or apps.  I then go on to explain that every phone can be used to get on the web, going into more detail about what excites them.

Most people are either adults that want e-mail access, and occasional news/weather, or kids wanting to use social sites.  With the exception of a Facebook native app, I've been selling more Blackjacks and Pantech Duos this month when they see they are cheaper upfront than the iPhone, can add thousands of apps, and costs the same per month as the iPhone.

I love the iPhone, it's such a great leader for some really nice devices.

I love explaining that you can get an hosted Exchange server for the same price as MobileMe, then you add Mesh on top of it for file transfers, lo and behold, a more robust solution that works!

Re: The iPhone 3G News Wrapup: Non-Hype Version

Nicely done, Kris! What an awesome way to tackle the situation! I think you're probably quite right that the iPhone has opened a lot of minds to the idea of doing Web/e-mail/apps on their phone, and in a lot of ways this actually works to the advantage of *every* competitor, including WM...

Re: The iPhone 3G News Wrapup: Non-Hype Version

In the continuing MobileMe saga, Ars Technica has posted what they say is an internal Apple e-mail from Steve Jobs, in which he admits

"The MobileMe launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services."

    Wow!

Re: The iPhone 3G News Wrapup: Non-Hype Version

The news continues. Everyone is now reporting on the new iPhone 3G advertising ban that was recently issued by Great Britain's Advertising Standards Authority. According to this group, an English iPhone 3G ad claiming access to "all" of the Internet is misleading, because the iPhone 3G doesn't support Flash or Java. Good to keep in mind!

Here's PC World's coverage of the ban, along with their review of other Apple advertising controversies.

Re: The iPhone 3G News Wrapup: Non-Hype Version

I presonally dont understand why the Apple product is getting any type of support from Windows at all, it is a seperate entity and claims to be more efficient than a Windows based device. I would let it drown right now, offering Windows apps is a way to enable this product which right now is floundering big time....I speak from the front lines people, I have been selling Windows Mobile based devices against the I Phone for over a year now and have had tremendous success, mainly because Windows is still main line and Apple is still the other guy.  Yes
