I think it's simpler than that. I don't think people who are buying the Iphone care so much about the Iphone and its faults, as they didn't with the RAZR. It's all about fashion and hype from the outset and then maintaining the public demand. Getting the Iphone 3G out quickly has been a masterstroke by Apple I think. It has maitained the momentum gained by the first Iphone just when it was dying off. It'll be interesting to see of the how it trys to maintain this momentum. The masses can be fickle.......

Re: Six Ways to Succesfully Compete with the iPhone

One thing apple does really well is to create alot of hype for there products. I have been in the cell phone industry for over 5 years and have never seen anything like the Iphone hype even the razr launch was nothing compared to this. Even when you point out the major features that the Iphone is lacking (ie. MMS, Stereo Bluertooth, etc. etc,) people still line up in droves to buy it just because that is what Steve Jobs said they need to do. Very soon they will release a bigger Iphone or more colors and people will start over again and buy more Iphones.

Re: Six Ways to Succesfully Compete with the iPhone

I have always said and stick to it.....Microsoft is a MASTER at marketing its WINDOWS and Office Priductivity Software...and APPLE is a Master at creating HYPE and BUZZ about its products to the "HIP APPLE USUERS"....Its not really all about the "product" the "idea" behind the product....I have been in the wireless industry well over 10 yrs. It all comes down to numbers.......Just think...how much marketing money each company has spent on the "HYPE" of its products. IF MICROSOFT IS LISTENING!!! CREATE A HUUGE! BUZZZ about WINDOWS 7 AND WINDOWS MOBILE 7 NOW!!! Spend the marketing money now.....If  APPLE can spend millions of dollars on the "HYPE PHONE" 2.0 and sell 1 Million handsets in the first weekend.....Do the math and project how many Windows XP users will upgrade to Windows 7 by far that is MORE than 1 million users....

You will be amazed at the customers that I have sold WM devices to after having them come in and saying, "I want an iPhone."  It's amazing what a few questions will do in figuring out what customers really want.

I think it's great that you can spend the time to explain to them the full capabilities of Windows Mobile.

The best questions I use are "Who else in your family has a phone?" and "Do you have kids?".  If the kids question is a yes, or an older person is a yes, then most likely MMS will be of some use.  Try explaining MMS e-mail gateways to someone sometime, and watch the eyes glaze over.

I don't think I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't ask questions.  You would be suprised how many people want a mobile for simple things like Facebook, music, or watching TV.  Name one WM device that can't do those things. :)

I've seen the (red) iPhone rumors for two years now.  I know Apple is big on Project (RED), but I'll believe it when I see them on my UPS driver's truck.

Re: Six Ways to Succesfully Compete with the iPhone

We have kicked and pushed and talked about this topic...I can across this Microsoft website!!!

The theme and marketing Venue is - Possibilities: Products -

Here is a quote from the site:

    QUOTE:

    The products

You live life beyond your PC. So do we.
We live a lot of life on our PCs — working, planning, playing, and connecting. But we live a whole lot more of life elsewhere. That's why Windows is on mobile phones and on the web. So the power and familiarity of Windows is available in more places and in more ways — closer to where you live your life.

There is a pretty good video to go along with this theme.....This is all revolving around Windows Vista, Windows Live and Windows Mobile! Click here to view the website:

Re: Six Ways to Succesfully Compete with the iPhone

    No insurance

    No true warranty

    No removable or extended battery

    Glass front

    Terrible call quality

I have been selling against the I Phone and smoking it in this area for a year now. It is not that hard at all, it is showing the customer the value of my product compared to theirs, and I can show the customer about 100 things I can do that an I Phone never could and may never will.

    No removable or extended battery

This was such a bad decision - my son bought the new 3g iPhone - ever since he is constantly out of battery and has had to borrow my phone a number of times.
