Re: Push E-mail: Windows Live Hotmail vs. BIS

For those that have Push Hotmail working consistently:

About how many emails do you keep in your inbox?
Do you subscribe to Premium Live Hotmail?
What domains are your live ids(@live, @hotmail, @MSN)?

I keep my inbox around 60-100 on average.  Windows Live only allows the most recent 50 messages on your device (which works fine, but I wonder if this has something to do with my problem.)
    I do subscribe to Premium
    I am using an @hotmail.com

Push Hotmail seemed to stop working reliably for me around July 2007.  Yet, I have continued to use it for over a year, because I can't live without OTA contact sync for my personal contacts.

    Hi Laura,

What devices have you had Hotmail pushing on?  I want to say that I have only had issue with Professional devices, but I have not used a standard device as my primary phone in quite sometime.

I would love to find a solution for this!  Just tried clearing my inbox down to like 20 messages and had a few new emails come in.   Still no push.

I have had it working on a TILT with WM6, a Moto Q with WM6 and now a Moto Q with WM 6.1

I have a MSN.com email account. I pay $19.95 per year for something but not too sure for what.

Have you set this up through Windows Live Mobile rather than a standard msn or hotmail account ?

Re: Push E-mail: Windows Live Hotmail vs. BIS

This push functionality is what I love about our new phone HTC Mogul. As soon as we found out you can use our Live.com account to act as a push account for our comcast accounts we set all our e-mail up this way. The only feature that I wish was available was the ability, that incidentaly is available on the website version of live.com, is the ability to have an alternate "sent from" e-mail account to appear in the FROM tab of your e-mail. For example, if we log in on our computer and compose an e-mail, we can click a drop down tab in the from field to change to any number of our e-mail addresses that we want the recipient to see when they open the e-mail. We set this up in the Options/More Options area where we chose to add another e-mail address in the "Reply To" link. When we compose an e-mail in our LIVE account on our phone we don't see anything showing this same option. This small limitation isn't keeping us from using this great feature to instantly see our e-mail, but it would be nice for this option to be added for Live Mobile. The only reason we're looking for this feature so we only use what appears to be one e-mail account so as to not confuse the people receiving our replies. We keep getting question from people as to why they sometimes see  "name"@comcast.net or and other times "name"@live.com when we send e-mail. They inevitably start replying to both and we're getting double responses. There may be a way to do this, but I haven't been able to find it so far, any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome, Krep26. You raise a really good point that I hadn't thought of. It's not a problem if you're always using your Live.com account as your sending account, but if you send from multiple accounts, I can see how an "account picker" option would be great. Let me look into it, and in the meantime, I'm sure you'll see some tips from others here as well.

Welcome Krep26 - I don't believe that this functionality is available - I also wish it was as then I would use the forwarding to my live account for more of my email accounts.

Re: Push E-mail: Windows Live Hotmail vs. BIS

Thanks for the quick responses. Like I said, I'm still excited to be able to have almost instant notification of incoming e-mail, but would love the ability to pick the send from account. My wife especially would use this all the time as she has 4 e-mail accounts between personal and her different business accounts.

    Thanks again,
    Kevin

Re: Push E-mail: Windows Live Hotmail vs. BIS

Hi njmarchetti, and others who have been watching this thread. We have gotten a bit more information from our Windows Mobile support contacts, and they are promising even more to come soon. At this point, we are hearing that there are at least two unusual reasons that Direct Push can fail with Windows Live Hotmail:

When the user chooses "As Items Arrive" they are requesting the mail server to "Push" the email alert to the device. Push Windows Live Mail can fail for the following reasons:

    1)  The client is going out of connectivity when the alert is received; sync is done when connectivity is regained if within the push window.

    2)  If connectivity is not regained within the push window the scheduler will entry into retry mode every hour and it retries if it gets a  "Connection Status Connected" change event.

Our contact says there may be another more complex reason having to do with the way "alert routing" works in WM, but the support team is still working to confirm this. So stay tuned, and please let us know if this informration has helped.

That used to be available in previous versions of Windows Mobile.  I also miss that feature and don't know why it was removed.

Re: Push E-mail: Windows Live Hotmail vs. BIS

    Thanks for the info Bill,

I am making progress on narrowing down the cause of the Push email issue.

I finally decided to try a different live ID and email address (new @live.com vs @hotmail.com).  AND IT WORKED!   It worked like it use to work, everytime.  I even imported my 100+ contacts from my main Hotmail account and it still worked.

So here are the remaining variables:
@Live.com email is working (@hotmail.com was not)
@Live.com email is a free account (@hotmail.com was Premium)
@Live.com email has <50MB of email (@hotmail.com has >500MB of email)
    @Live.com email 6 emails in inbox (@hotmail.com 60+ emails)
@Live.com has 0 folders created (@hotmail.com has 36 folders all with emails)
    @Live.com uses server bay 102 (@hotmail.com uses server bay144)
@Live.com email never used any version of WL prior to current release (@hotmail.com used many different version of WL, including early betas, extracted versions from other ROMs, and official current release)

While it is exciting to have WL working again, changing my email address IS NOT an acceptable work around.  I need to get Push email working for my @hotmail.com email.

For those that have Push email working, could you post in response to the below questions:
    What is your mailbox usage?
How many emails do you typically keep in your inbox?
How many folders do you have?
What server bay is your mailbox on?  (Check the URL when you login to your inbox)

    Thank you for your help!

Re: Push E-mail: Windows Live Hotmail vs. BIS

Thanks Bill.  I did some more testing and am making more progress on finding where this problem comes from.

@Live.com email is working (@hotmail.com is not)

@Live.com email has <50MB of email (@hotmail.com has >500MB of email)
    @Live.com email 6 emails in inbox (@hotmail.com 60+ emails)
@Live.com has 0 folders created (@hotmail.com has 36 folders all with emails)
I used the TruSwitch service to copy all of my @hotmail email over to my @live account.  Push email still worked perfectly on the @live account.

The only things that are different between the accounts and obviously can not be tested are:
@Live.com uses server bay 102 (@hotmail.com uses server bay144)  unless there is a way to change the server bay your account sits on?
@Live.com email never used any version of WL prior to current release (@hotmail.com used many different version of WL, including early betas, extracted versions from other ROMs, and official current release)
@Live.com is a newer account (@hotmail.com several years old - was Hotmail.com, then Live Mail Beta, and now Live Hotmail)

I contacted the Windows Live Hotmail Techinical support, as I am now almost positive that the problem is with my @hotmail.com.   Whatever the issue, I am sure it effects more accounts than mine, as I have run across multiple threads trying to fix this problem without resolution.

Let me know if the support team has any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem. Thanks

Re: Push E-mail: Windows Live Hotmail vs. BIS

     njmarchetti,

Thanks for your help, I too have had problems with my old hotmail.com account, established in 2000? My free hotmail.com account has never worked, so I tried a new @live.com account and so far everything seems to work fine. I'm going to try and tranfer over my old emails from hotmail like you to see how things workout.

     thanks
