Apple Mac OS X use with Windows Mobile devices

Just wanted to mention for the few who may not know, that you can synchronize Windows Mobile devices with a wide array of data beyond simple PIM data using some Mac add-on software. See: http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_windowsmobile.php http://www.pocketmac.net/products/pmforwm5_6/index.html There are some limitations, but not many. For example, you may be able to install applications but actually running through a whole ROM upgrade is a tough nut to crack. Any feedback along these lines would be appreciated. I've used only demo versions of these applications but felt they worked quite nicely with my Power Mac G5 (somewhat older model, the Intel Macs are probably even better for this software). One thing I never could accomplish was to use Virtual PC for Mac OS X, running Windows XP, to allow for a synchronization with ActiveSync. Running USB through Virtual PC was just too sluggish. However, I did run Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 on a virtual Vista running under Parallels Desktop for Mac (see: http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/ ) on a friend's Intel MacBook with 2GB of RAM. That was kewl! I've also found that even without any sync software on Mac OS X, you can easily use the Mac's Bluetooth File Transfer to blast over a file from the computer to the device. Works nicely as long as the two are close by each other.

Using bluetooth for internetsharing works great too.

Also you can use SyncMate, it syncs iCal and Adressbook for free, but you have to pay if you want to sync iPhoto, iTunes, etc...

If you have to run Windows for some obscure applications (like I have to), I prefer VMware Fusion to Parallels. You can also use VMware Fusion to sync with Windows through USB if you want.

Great post Andre - thanks. I have a Mac Book Pro - it was on my son's lap in a car accident (he was a passenger). The screen broke and it buckled but it still works. So I hooked it up to a monitor and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and I find it useful occassionally. I haven't yet tried syncing with a WM device, but I hadn't thought to connect the two via bluetooth for transferring files.

Missing Sync ususally does the most thorough job of syncing, but SyncMate is good to if you have Leopard or Tiger.
