I love articles like this.  Sensationalize change so that older people get scared.

Quite honestly, it's all about qualifying the right device for the right customer.  I'm not going to sell a Blackjack II to a person that only wants to use the phone for calls and pics, especially if they are older, unless they ask me or if they show interest when I ask them about smartphones.

And people don't realize they don't have to sign contracts with most carriers, if they are willing to pay full retail for the device they want.

I think there are definitely people who want a simple cell phone and then there are the 'power users'.

I carry two devices - a Motorola Razr and a TILT. I simply want to make phone calls on the Razr.

I totally agree the masses really just want a phone that will make calls.

There is also a significant number of people who want something different, different form factors, different styling, different features, but then are hundreds if not thousands of different mobiles depending on your own requirements.

Looking at the latest crop devices the features list is increasing as is the list of new fangled technology: OLED keypads; ever increasing mega pixel cameras and numerous different takes on the input keypad/keyboard method.

There will always be the people who only want a mobile to make phones and the manufacturers will always make a phone for them.

But, there will always be the people (with more money) who want the latest technological advances and the freshest features. As these devices cost more, the manufacturers can afford to sell fewer. We will always see more high end phones, even if the volumes are lower.

We look at the number of devices on the market to see what the trends are. But does anybody have a list of the best selling devices? by volume?

That is EXACTLY what i have been looking for! I wanted that data for a long time now. I have to make a decision -  I want to bring on a new product line - unlocked devices - I know they sell...and if we do bring them on we will have to keep the numbers low until demand changes it.

    Laura Rooke:
-- 74% of all cellphones have a clamshell design — an increase of 24% from 2006. Meanwhile, 21% have a candybar style and 5% have a “slide-cover” design.

Laura has found exactly what you seem to be looking for in this post.

I've just got done watching the new Sex and the City movie - I know you guys out there have no interest in this, but one funny part was particularly amusing to me - Carrie had lost her cell phone. This phone was a standard clam shell phone with sparkles. She needed to call Mr.Big - she asked to borrow someone's phone. Miranda handed Carrie her iPhone. Carrie looks at it and at this point there was quite a large shot of the menu screen. Carrie shakes her head and says something like - I have no idea how to use this.

Re: Device Study: Skip the Bell & Whistles

When my wife or my daughter (gender not being the point) use my phone to make a call or make a text both of them hand it back and ask how to use it... My wife has owned a Wndows Mobile before, the XDA 1.

My brother bought a PDA and his first call was to me to show him how to use it.

It's no different from any other phone when it comes to these, but a lot of people do look at a smartphones and are scared by the unknown.

Tell any person that they have to use a Windows Mobile device from now on and within 2 minutes they will have found every feature that they would want to use.

I think that Microsoft has a job in getting more people to see that a Windows Mobile device is still a mobile, it can just do more.

They have made a great move in the renaming of the different OSs. No longer will a person see 'Pocket PC' and think that it will be like using an actual PC.

"Windows Mobile? Oh, so its a mobile made my Microsoft. Great!"

Re: Device Study: Skip the Bell & Whistles

I agree....and my wife is the complete opposite....she doesnt care what it is.....she sees it as a "new toy" and wants one rather she needs it or not.....and in about 3 days she will bring it back to me and say....." I don't want this". But she does see me with my WM and wants one bad......soooo...with all that said.....code word Microsoft...and Oh! Everything is ok!
