Less expensive phones driving mobile Web usage

As everybody must know by now - I am really looking forward to getting a HTC Advantage. For me using the internet on my Tilt is not a good experience - the screen is just too small, so that's why the 5" screen of the Advantage appeals.

So when I read this report from Fiercewireless, I was suprised. It seems that it's not the Windows Mobile phones that are the most popular with mobile web browsers, but the 'ordinary' cell phones like the Motorola RAZR and the KRZR. Personally I have never browsed the web on my RAZR, nor would I want to.

Is it simply the case that there are more of these cheaper phones around?

Are these phones only able to mobile specific websites ( http:\\m.website.com ) ?

I also find it interesting that they are able to tell which devices have accessed the site...

Since I have to setup all the demos in my store, I make sure to use m. sites that look good.

ebay and Facebook look okay on a Moto browser.

Well in all actuallity, I can really see why this is true. You got your major websites like Facebook, Myspace and Youtube going to these mobile websites. Majority of the people that use these sites are in the age group that just want to have simple phones because they just have no use for a WM or BB. And if you can watch a youtube clip through a 3g enabled device combined with a couple of times a day to see profile updates on what your friends are doing, it no wonder why cheaper phones are driving mobile web usage out the roof.

Exactly.  Most teens/college kids want the coolest looking phones.  As long as they can SMS/MMS and view a few sites, that seems to be all they need.
