Apple, AT&T mum on iPhone 3G issues

After his third iPhone 3G continued to cut him off in the middle of his conversations, Ryan Shaw had seen enough.

Sounds like similar issues the early HTC Universal's had (JasJar). Maybe Apple just don't know how to do 3G yet. It took HTC a couple of ROM versions and devices for that matter to get it right.

Yes, I wouldnt put it down to At&T as they initially imply in the article, in aus, the optus network is the same,  3g gets 1 to 2 bars, when a win mo device next to it has full reception on3g.

Change the iphone to GPRS only, and it has full reception.

I have also seen a few reports about the GPS suffering from similar issues following the 2.0.1 upgrade.

I wonder if the 3G issue is also down to this upgrade???

Everything I've read suggests that the issue is most likely not the network (since users outside the US have been having the same problems) but the Apple hardware, specifically the 3G chip from Infineon, which is being called an "immature" chipset that can't be fixed by any software or firmware updates. Wonder what Apple will do?

Here's a nice little article from GigaOm that discusses the hardware issue.

If it is hardware I can't see Apple doing anything about it and I don't think they need to. When the iPhone next iteration is released I'm sure there will be queues around the block irrespective. The current radio might be poor, but it'll be good enough for Joe Public who just wants an iPhone.

I'm not too sure that this would hold for Apple.

The first phone was a feature phone and touted as such.

The 3G iPhone has been touted as an enterprise ready device. It has fallen far from this goal.

Are people going to trust the hype that has proven to be just that the next time?

If the third iPhone fails to deliver, will people turn their backs completely?

If the third device fails to deliver too then I think people will start noticing, but while it's "cool" people will buy it no matter how bad it is.

Again! it all boils down to marketing...."cool" "status symbol" or as I call it...."hype-phone" enterprise ready it still not....adnd if Apple fails again as Dave suggested on the third device....people will still buy it....any one remember Windows ME???  Have we stopped buying Microsoft OS computers? Stick out tongue Now everything I need to sync sits in a black leather valet on my desk....and Vista handles the rest!
