    VOIP in Windows Mobile

Hi, I am just trying several VOIP applications on Windows Mobile 5.0 and I am facing a problem in the clarity of the voice while am having a gr8 connection bandwidth a gr8 software like SKYPE.

By researching and visiting different blogs; I am finding some people assuring that Windows Mobile 6.0 is comming with enhancments regarding this matter. so is it right?

what is enhanced in Windows Mobile 6 to make it better for VOIP?

What applications you recommend to have a good call (Free ones Stick out tongue)

    Regards,

    Khaled

It would be good to know about the enhancements. To date, testing both products, the user experience with symbian devices is flawless, and extremely easy to setup. I've yet to find a WM variant that works well. This is not to say its not a problem with my setup however, but off the bat the symbians seem to handle it better.

I haven't tested wm6.  Might do that tonight.

If you intend to do yourself a favor, use
    SKYPE
and invite your friends to join.

Although it is proprietary, at least it works great!
You should just have a 400 MHz CPU in your device for voice calls and select a broadband connection (UMTS, HSDPA, WiFi).

    Re: VOIP in Windows Mobile

The integrated VoIP support in Windows Mobile 6 is pretty nice. You can set it to automatically use VoIP "Internet Calling" when it's available through a WiFi connection (or 3G with a reg hack). It supports most SIP VoIP services.  I use Voipbuster.  Many devices don't come with the VoIP component though.

It sometimes has issues automatically and reliably connecting to the VoIP service, so I'll just manually turn it on after connected to WiFi.  Provisioning is a bit difficult if you go the CAB file creation route, which is required on "Standard" devices, but Shap has created a "Setup VoIP" utility to make this easier on WM Professional. You might also have to create your own ipdialplan.xml file. This xml file defines how to dial phone numbers in your addressbook when using the Internet Calling account.

After you get everything working, the VoIP is fully integrated with the Windows Mobile dialer and you can make VoIP calls using any of the normal calling methods including Microsoft Voice Command via a Bluetooth headset.

That's one of the reason's I've dropped Skype!

The voice quality on VoipBuster is better than regular GSM, however you might notice a slight delay between the voice transmission.  Other services might have better results.  I would imagine it would work better if you use your own internal SIP VoIP server.

I was never able to get SIP VoIP to work on my Nokia N95.  I entered all the correct settings, but it just wouldn't work at all.  Wouldn't connect.  So my experience with that definitely wasn't flawless.

    Re: VOIP in Windows Mobile

Even though the call quality is not always flawless, I would still recommend using Skype especially if you get your friends and family to sign up for it and use peer-to-peer calling. I've used Skype and both 5.0 and 6.0 devices and haven't seen a big difference in performance. You do need a 3G/UMTS connection to make it work. Also, using Skype definitely takes a toll on your battery life so be prepared for that and make sure you have a charger for your device with you.

Also, make sure that you're using the latest version of Skype (2.2), which is available for download from here: http://www.skype.com/download/skype/windowsmobile/download.html.

The latest feature offers a much better integration with the Windows Mobile Phone application than previous versions.

     Enjoy!

    Thanks alot...

Yes I think SKYPE is one of the best and a reliable software when we need a flawless connection.

I will follow your instructions in the testing and let us see what will happen :)

    Re: VOIP in Windows Mobile

Here are some more links and information about using SIP VoIP in Windows Mobile.

It should work with any SIP VoIP server, so if you have one in your company connected to a PBX and want to make/recieve phone calls on your work line using a WiFi Windows Mobile device, it's a pretty cool solution.  It used to work with Vonage service as well, but they've changed their protocols to disallow it.

I can't wait 'til Windows Mobile supports UMA as well as SIP VoIP!

..and the minute Skype supports video calling on Windows Mobile using the front facing camera, I'll be back to that!

    Re: VOIP in Windows Mobile

I agree, the VoIP core in WM6 seems to be ok - however there are a number of things it seems to mess up.
    1) Silence Detection. 95% of the time I've had to manually disable this via a registry change.
    2) g729 support seems to be... flakey... It works sometimes, but not others.

Other than that, using u/alaw (g711u/a) seems to be fine.
