WM 6.1 Backwards compatible to XP

Can you sync a 6.1 device to XP?

I am also having a lot of issues getting ActiveSync to work on my home machine.  It syncs up fine with my exchange server from work, but it takes FOREVER to create the connection via USB.  I left it connected overnight, and it still wouldn't sync.  I've got nothing in my Outlook at home, so I wouldn't think that would be an issue.

I mainly want to sync for media files, as my e-mail is webmail based, and set up already on my phone.

Yes, WM 6.1 devices will sync with an XP machine - I sync a WM6.1 device with both an XP and a Vista machine.

I'm not sure why it would take so long to connect. Are you saying that it eventually connected? What device are you trying to connect? What version of Activesync do you have?

It never connected with the USB.  I am using an HTC Touch.  It's setup at home, so I don't have the ActiveSync information in front of me.

I would make sure first, that you have Activesync 4.5.

Verify that "Advanced Network functionality" is disabled. Go to Start > Settings > Connection > USB to PC. If it's not, uncheck it and re-connect your phone.

Finally got it to sync, but it won't convert a lot of the video media files I want to sync.  Any advice?

The 1 I got to work was/is wmv.  I think some of the rest of them are mpegs, avi's and divx.

Windows Media Player will only play .wmv files, and you can only sync these file types.

You can do a simple copy of the other file types - open up your device from your PC and then drag the video files to a folder on your device. Then you will need something like CorePlayer to play these other file types.

    Lukewarm81,

What did you do to resolve the sync issue? Just curious.

I got it to working.  When I sync media files it works, but always says that Setup needs to be completed.  The files still sync, so I'm not too worried about it. . .

If you have selected to sync via the Media option, you need to open up Windows Media Player, click on Sync , Sync Settings - to set your options.

And I, like Linley,  am also curious to know what you changed to make it sync.

Lukewarm, do you have a firewall running? Have you added the activesync EXE into the exclusions list? Activesync opens a tcp/ip port for connections.

I think disabling advanced network functionality switches off the dependency on tcp but... your data transfer would be slower.
