    Live Mesh for Windows Mobile

I'm not getting a lot of good information about the Live Mesh team's WM client.  Since Apple announced MobileMe (.mac 2.0) I'm curious how this will compare.

    Anyone got ideas?

    Answer

    Hey, Kris -

I'm a big fan of MSDN, and I found the Live Mesh team blog here. It's got a nice discussion of how it all works, although not necessarily all the details of what, when, or how.

That blog is what I was looking for.  I'm trying to explain this to my wife, and the current post breaks it down pretty well.

Windows Live Mesh for Windows Mobiles

I have recently experienced the Tech Preview for Live Mesh and I am very impressed.

The Mobile Phone support has not yet been released and it set me thinking about how it will look.

If it ties in with the PC and Internet experience I would expect it to look something like the following:

At 240x320 the original images do not actually need any resizing, which would suggest the QVGA screens could handle Live Mesh very nicely indeed.

Re: Windows Live Mesh for Windows Mobiles

After reading this article regarding Microsoft buying MobiComp, who currently offer a service to backup your PIM data, I began thinking about how I currently store mine.

I use PPC PIM Backup which runs everyday at midday and saves the data to my strage card. I keep the past five days only, which controls the space used but leaves me enough restore options incase I miss an issue with my PIM data when it first hits.

Now, the chances of both my Phone and my Storage Card losing that data is slim, but that chance is there. And there is always the chance of me losing my phone and therefore all data included.

I am now going to try and use Live Mesh to store this data.

I have changed my backup schedule to store to My Documents on the phone itself and am using ActiveSync to copy My Documents to my PC. I will then look to getting these into a Live Mesh folder so that my data is accessible wherever I am and is backed up no matter which of my devices fails.

It has also set me thinking about how else I can sync my data/files with Live Mesh to secure my important work and personal data.

Re: Windows Live Mesh for Windows Mobiles

It always amazes me how many people have no backup of important data. Also scary, is the fact that some people rely on the fact that they have data on both their device and PC, but if something gets messed up on either of these and then they sync - they have no backup and data is now messed up in both places.

I backup my device to a storage card about once a week. I also use Carbonite for offsite backup of my PC. I always fear that one day I'll come home to a burnt down house and lose all my data. Carbonite is just $49.95 per year for unlimited storage. My backup currently is about 50GB in size. It only stores one copy of the data, but to store multiple copies of unimted data is a lot more expensive.

I've started using LiveMesh for files that I want to access anywhere. I have a few photo folders on it also.

Microsoft better keep mobile in mind on Live Mesh.  Apple's MobileMe is getting huge press, and Nokia is picking up other software to make Ovi.  If I could show Live Mesh as an answer, the things that WinMob devices can do will help me steer people from iPhone.

I'm dreading July 11th.......gonna be a long day for me.

I check the connect site everyday for mobile support.

Cant wait, I've already got live mesh running on several PCs and its invaluable, even just the remote control feature

I wonder if the remote control feature will work from the device?

You can do this with logmein as I posted here.

I do hope so and I've just signed up with LogMeIn Smile

I've realised, late in the day, that you can add existing folders from your PC to your Live Mesh list.

I have already setup ActiveSync to copy my documents from my mobile to the PC. I have now added that folder to my LiveMesh, so each time I sync with my PC, I am effectively syncing with my LiveMesh. I will replicate this on all of my PCs to increase that syncing functionality.

    - I have tried to view www.mesh.com on my device and although I can view the page, the scripting seems to be stopping me from connecting onto my Live Desktop and/or my PC. I guess I will have to wait the mobile version of LiveMesh.

Re: Windows Live Mesh for Windows Mobiles

Windows Mesh currently has 2 distinguishable formats.

On your PC there you can currently assign a list of folders for syncing.

There is then the online experience where through your browser you can view and interact with your online Live Desktop. Here you can access the folders and files that you uploaded and view JPG, BMP and WMV media files.

On both your own desktop and your online Live Desktop, you have the Live Mesh Notifier. This gives you the three tabs - News, Devices and Active Folders.

    ·         News - is a log of the files/folders which have been synced and any actions regarding them such as files/folders added/deleted.

    ·         Devices - shows your Live Desktop and any devices which you have LiveMesh installed on.

    ·         Active Folders - you can allow friends to view specified folders and this shows if anybody is currently viewing them.

Obviously there will be more to come, but these are the features available in this Tech Preview.

The mobile version will probably be very similar to the PC version allowing you to assign folders to be synced and a mobile version of the Live Mesh Notifier.

The PC and online versions are currently working seamlessly, so I would not expect it to be long before the Mobile beta version begins public testing.

I would certainly like to involved at that stage Wink

Windows Live Mesh can now be accessed via the web on your mobile device.

Warner Crocker from GottaBeMobile drew my attention to this here and he has pictures too. He says......

"I’m able to access it on the Sprint Mogul and pull down some of my files from any of the folders I’ve created. Again, this is web access only and not a client side app for Mesh. I haven’t seen any publicity on this yet, so we’ll see how it goes."

That would be very cool!  I hope the Live Mesh Remote Desktop makes it in there too.  It seems we already have most of the technology.

    Answer

I have been trialling the mobile web version and I have to say its a really good mobile option, until the WIndows Mobile client arrives.

It is a very plain interface giving you exactly what you need.

It gives you the two options to delete or download to your device rather than sync.

And for those with a hardware keyboard it also includes number press shortcuts.

There is a great feature which allows you to add pictures into a automatically created Mobile Pictures folder. N.B. This option is hidden off to the right using Opera 9.5

You'll need to use a password manager to get auto access on a return visit, or you'll need to enter your email Windows Live ID each time.
